29 of our employees were chosen to volunteer at the Olympic and Para Olympic Games. They all had various roles across London and other parts of the country.
Team USA training camp, Birmingham 18–19 July 2012
Three employees were privileged to be selected as Birmingham City Council volunteers to work at a training camp set up for the USA Track and Field Team during their stay in Birmingham last month in the lead up to London 2012. They were based at Alexander Stadium and were involved in Sportsfest, a special event for all Birmingham schools. The event not only provided the school children with an opportunity to experience a variety of sports featured in the Games, such as BMX, athletics, football and tennis, they also had the chance to meet the Team USA athletes, ask them questions and find out about their lives as Olympians.
It was a great experience for the volunteers and a huge boost to everyone in Birmingham as the athletes immersed themselves in local life. The Jamaican athletes also trained at the stadium’s high performance centre, including double Olympian, Usain Bolt!
